CO Charter Schools Myths vs. Facts

State of CO Charters Report 2016

What is a Charter school?

A charter school is a public school operated by a group of parents, teachers and/or community members as a semi-autonomous school of choice authorized by the school district. The charter school operates under a charter (a contract) between the charter school and the district.

Is Vanguard Classical School part of the Aurora Public Schools district?

Vanguard Classical School is chartered through the Aurora Public School (APS) district and is offered as a school of choice.

How is Vanguard Classical School funded? Do you charge tuition fees?

Vanguard Classical School receives ‘per pupil’ funding from the state and the district as other public schools. However, a measurable percentage of operating funds pays for facility needs as charter schools do not receive facility support. Therefore, Vanguard Classical School actively seeks opportunities to raise additional funds in order to meet the needs of the facilities and programs of the school. We do not charge tuition fees.

To whom is Vanguard Classical School accountable?

Vanguard Classical School is accountable to the families in the school, the local school district and the state. The district sponsors Vanguard Classical School and, through a contract, has outlined certain provisions the charter school is responsible to fulfill. Vanguard Classical School is also required to participate in the state-mandated Colorado Student Assessment Program. It is through this program that charter schools, along with all other public schools in the state, are measured. School Accountability Reports (SAR) are issued annually for public schools in the state including charter schools.
